Neck Pain Physiotherapy
Are You Struggling with Neck Pain?
Neck pain can affect your daily function and identity. It can affect your concentration, your sleep and even how you interact with others. Many people describe feeling tense, foggy and worn down by the constant ache or stiffness. Movements like turning your head, driving or sitting at a desk can become difficult.
It can feel like neck pain can rule your life - from how well you feel when you wake up, how you sit at your desk, to how well you sleep at night. Invisible to others, but impossible to ignore.
At Vitalis Physio, we understand how neck pain can interfere with your daily life, whether it’s a sudden flare-up, persistent stiffness, or pain radiating into the shoulders, your arm or your head. It may be linked to posture, work stress, injury or have no clear reason at all.
Our expert physiotherapists specialise in assessing and treating neck pain, whether it’s due to poor posture, stress, whiplash, arthritis or hours at a desk. Neck Physiotherapy can settle down an acute flare-up and also treat episodes of neck pain that need a longer-term management strategy.
Our aim is simple: to help you take control of your pain and feel stronger. Get back to doing the things you love.
Expert Physio for Neck Pain
No two cases of neck pain are the same. That’s why our approach is centred around you, your body and what’s important to you. We use a structured assessment to uncover the underlying causes of your symptoms - why it hurts.
This thorough assessment includes:
Listening to your beliefs, fears and how pain disrupts your life. We take time to understand your beliefs, emotional responses, context and behavioural reactions to pain - especially how these hinder your valued life activities.
Analysis of how you move through painful movements, especially if you are guarded or anxious.
Understanding how you think or feel about your symptoms
How your body, lifestyle and stresses interact.
Ruling out serious pathology or conditions as causes.
Following the assessment, a treatment plan will be created tailored to your story, your unique pain triggers and your contributing factors.
Our treatment approach may include:
Graded movement re-training - patients test their troublesome movements (e.g rotating your neck) in a safe, graded way in a new posture
Stretching, strengthening and conditioning your muscles with your new posture incorporated
Soft tissue release
Dry needling
Manual therapy to loosen any stiff joints
Strengthening of the neck, shoulder and upper back muscles with your new posture incorporated so you can move in the right posture easily
Our goal is long-term neck pain recovery, not just a quick fix.
Cervicogenic Headache Treatment
At Vitalis Physio, we specialise in identifying and treating cervicogenic headaches, a common but often overlooked type of headache that originates from the neck rather than the head itself.
What Is a Cervicogenic Headache?
A cervicogenic headache (CGH) is caused by problems or dysfunction in the upper cervical spine, usually the top three vertebrae (C1–C3). Even though the pain is felt in the head, the source is actually the neck, often due to joint stiffness, muscle tension, or nerve irritation.
Patients often describe:
One-sided headaches that may start in the neck and radiate to the eye or temple
Headaches triggered by neck movement or poor posture
Associated neck stiffness or reduced range of motion
Headaches that don’t respond well to typical painkillers
These symptoms can be easily confused with migraines or tension-type headaches, which is why an accurate assessment is essential.
A Research-Based Approach to Headache Relief
Our understanding of cervicogenic headache has been advanced significantly by the work of Dr. Dean Watson, an Australian physiotherapist and researcher who developed the Watson Headache® Approach.
This method targets the upper cervical spine using precise, sustained pressure techniques, not manipulation, to:
Identify which cervical segments of the spine are contributing to the headache
Reproduce and then relieve the patient’s typical headache symptoms
Desensitise the brainstem area that connects neck dysfunction to head pain (the trigeminocervical complex)
Watson’s research has shown that these techniques can not only relieve symptoms but may also reduce central sensitisation, making long-term recovery more likely.

Physiotherapy is very effective for neck pain, especially when caused by bad posture, muscle tightness, or joint stiffness. We correct posture, use manual techniques to loosen stiff joints and recommend customised physio exercises to restore pain-free normal movement.
-
The best exercises for neck pain depend on your symptoms. There may be a combination of strength and mobility exercises prescribed, as well as specific ‘glides’ you can perform at home to self-treat when your neck feels stiff.

One-sided headaches that may start in the neck and radiate to the eye or temple
Headaches triggered by neck movement or poor posture

At Vitalis Physio in Oxfordshire, we often treat clients who aren’t sure whether they’re experiencing migraines or cervicogenic headaches. While both conditions can feel similar, their causes and treatments are very different.

A cervicogenic headache is a headache that comes from the neck, usually due to dysfunction in the upper cervical spine(C1–C3). It often presents as a steady, one-sided ache that starts in the neck and radiates into the head, around the eye, or behind the ear.
This type of headache is commonly caused by:
Poor posture
Joint stiffness or muscle tension in the neck
Prolonged desk work or phone use
Old injuries or whiplash
-
A migraine is a complex neurological condition that can cause intense, throbbing head pain along with other symptoms such as:
Nausea
Sensitivity to light or sound
Visual disturbances (aura)
Fatigue and dizziness
Migraines can be triggered by:
Stress
Hormonal changes
Certain foods
Sensory overload
Sleep disruption

If your headaches are caused or worsened by neck movement, posture, or stiffness, they may be cervicogenic. Physiotherapy can help.
At Vitalis Physio, we use the Watson Headache® Approach, a proven method developed by Dr. Dean Watson to:
Accurately identify cervicogenic headaches
Treat the root cause through gentle, non-manipulative techniques
Reduce irritation of the nerves that refer pain from the neck to the head
Improve neck mobility, posture, and long-term resilience
-

Many patients experience relief within the first few sessions. However, full recovery may take longer depending on how long you’ve had symptoms and what’s causing them. We will guide you each step of the way.
-
Yes. Poor posture from mobile phone and computer use (“tech neck”) is a growing issue. We provide postural re-training, ergonomic advice, and strength work to reduce strain and improve alignment.
-
We always work within your tolerance and explain everything clearly before starting. Manual therapy for neck conditions can be uncomfortable and can reproduce symptoms. This is always done with your prior consent. You are encouraged to guide the therapist as to what is tolerable and within your comfort limits.
-
Wear comfortable clothes that allow access to your neck, shoulders, and upper back. A vest top is ideal.
