Treatment for Back Pain at Vitalis Physio

Are You Struggling with Back Pain?

Back pain often affects daily function and identity. There can be a sense of loss of control over one’s body and routine. Sleep can become an issue as can movements that we take for granted such as standing, bending or sitting. It can also get in the way of working and put strain on personal relationships due to the change in mobility or emotional fragility that can accompany pain. Some people describe feeling. ‘Like I am in a fog’ or ‘no-one can see it, but it rules my life’.Back pain is one of the most common reasons people seek out physiotherapy. Physiotherapy can effectively help settle down an acute flare-up and also treat episodes of back pain that need a longer-term management strategy.

At Vitalis Physio, based at The Watlington Wellness Centre, we specialise in treating back pain.

Our aim is simple, to help you move better, feel stronger, and get back to doing the things you love.

Expert Physio for Lower Back Pain

No two cases of lower back pain are the same. That’s why our approach is centred around you, your body ,and what’s important to you. We use a structured assessment to uncover the underlying causes of your symptoms - not just where it hurts, but why it hurts.

This thorough assessment includes:

  • A full history of your symptoms

  • Analysis of how you move

  • Understanding how you think or feel about your symptoms

  • How your body, lifestyle and stresses interact

Following the assessment, a tailored treatment plan will be created tailored to your story and your unique pain triggers.  This may include:

  • Movement re-training

  • Stretching, strengthening and  conditioning your muscles

  • Soft tissue release

  • Dry needling

  • Manual therapy

Our goal is long-term recovery, not just a quick fix.

‘I cannot thank Emma-Jane enough for her professional care. I have been suffering from a persistent sciatic nerve injury and had almost lost hope until I discovered Emma-Jane’s unique approach to treatment. By combining hands on treatment, exercise, dry needling and advice, she alleviated pain and restored my mobility. The professionalism, compassion and attention to detail she demonstrated throughout my treatment were phenomenal. I am extremely happy with the results and highly recommend her services to anyone in need of expert physiotherapy care.’

  • What Our Patients Say

I can’t recommend Emma-Jane Harding at Vitalis Physio highly enough. I have mild hip dysplasia in my right hip which became excruciatingly painful over the summer. Within just four weeks of seeing Emma, I was able to walk normally again, and I now continue to see her fortnightly as we work towards getting everything fully back to normal.

Emma takes her profession very seriously and has an exceptional understanding of the body. Her attention to detail, focus, and the way she explains things have been phenomenal. What really makes the difference is not just seeing her, but also following the rehab she sets - it’s every bit as important as the sessions themselves.

If you’re experiencing pain, I would wholeheartedly recommend going to see Emma-Jane. She’s been brilliant and has made a huge difference for me.

  • What Our Patients Say

It was Emma-Jane’s expertise in hip and other conditions, together with her extensive experience that were the deciding factors in booking an appointment with her at Watlington Wellness Centre, after a painful hip had not eased after a few sessions with an osteopath (I now know I should have seen a physio!).

I knew I was in safe, professional and thorough hands from the first appointment – Emma-Jane confirmed I had developed gluteal tendinopathy as a result of my outside hip muscles working overtime to compensate for weakness in my hip flexors, inner thigh muscles and hamstrings. She also wrote a letter for my GP requesting an X-ray. A few weeks on and my bespoke exercise plan, which she reviews and updates each session, plus soft tissue release and dry needling around my hip muscles has all made a difference and I am delighted that I am improving.

I am so glad I found Emma-Jane and I highly recommend her.

  • What Our Patients Say

Highly recommend Emma-Jane, I have seen various practitioners for my neck and shoulder and Emma-Jane is the only one who has made a lasting difference. She uses a combination of hands on physical therapy, medical acupuncture and exercises to produce the desired result. She is also a very kind and understanding practitioner, who takes the time to listen to problems thoroughly without rushing and explains what she is doing at every step.

FAQs About Back Pain Physiotherapy

  • Your first session will involve a detailed assessment where we look at your history, symptoms, posture, and movement. We’ll then discuss the findings and begin your personalised treatment plan.

  • It depends on your condition. Some people feel significantly better after just a few sessions, while others may benefit from a longer-term plan. We'll always be transparent and work with you to meet your goals.

  • Yes, physiotherapy can be extremely effective for chronic back pain. We use techniques designed to reduce inflammation, improve strength, and address the root causes of long-term discomfort.

  • Absolutely. We offer physio tape for back pain as part of our treatment, where appropriate. It can support your back, improve alignment, and aid recovery, particularly useful for sports or occupational strain.

  • We recommend checking with your provider. We’re happy to provide any paperwork or receipts needed for claims.

  • Yes, one of the core goals of physiotherapy is not just pain relief but long-term prevention. We’ll work with you on strengthening exercises, posture correction, and movement habits to help reduce the risk of recurrence.

  • Lower back pain typically refers to discomfort in the lumbar region, which is the most common type. General back pain may include mid-back or upper back discomfort. We tailor our physio for lower back pain depending on the location and cause of your symptoms.

  • Back pain can stem from poor posture, muscle imbalances, disc issues, sedentary lifestyle, injury, or stress. Our assessment will help determine the root cause, whether it’s muscular, neurological, or spinal.

  • Physio tape for back pain can be an effective short-term support tool. It can help improve posture, support weak muscles, and reduce strain on painful areas during daily activities or sport.

  • Yes. If your back pain is radiating down the leg or linked to nerve irritation (like sciatica), our spinal and neurological assessments will identify this. Treatment will then focus on nerve mobility, reducing compression, and relieving pressure.

  • Not always. Some people benefit more from movement-based therapy or exercise rehab than manual therapy. We only use hands-on physiotherapy for back pain when it adds value to your recovery process.

  • Yes. Intermittent back pain often indicates an underlying issue that hasn’t been fully addressed. Early treatment can prevent it from becoming chronic or more severe.

  • In most cases, yes and in fact, movement is often encouraged. We’ll guide you on which exercises are safe and helpful based on your individual condition.

  • Long periods of rest can sometimes make back pain worse. While it’s important not to push through severe pain, gentle activity and guided movement usually support faster recovery. We’ll help you find the right balance.

  • No referral is needed. You can contact us directly to book an appointment.
